Sep 16, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/01This paper surveys the evidence on the ways in which economic development and policies aimed at advancing human development have contributed and currently contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. It also examines the feedback effects that such warming and the resulting climate change can have on growth and human development, especially in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
Jun 27, 2012APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/06This paper explores the sources of greenhouse emissions in Asian cities and the particular vulnerabilities of Asian cities to the impacts of climate change. Through a review of policies and field-based studies undertaken in two Asian megacities, Jakarta (Indonesia) and Mumbai (India), local community vulnerabilities are explored and innovative adaptive measures identified.
May 7, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/07This paper presents the effects of increased temperatures and sea-level rise, together with other climate-linked changes to the Pacific Islands. It examines past responses to climate changes and barriers in driving adaptation to climate change at the community level. It also presents a set of fundamental challenges to livelihoods in the Pacific Islands region posed by future climate change and recommendations to reduce the impacts of such changes.
Sep 16, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/09The study addresses the variation in adaptive capacity of farmers located in Asian deltas due to different forms of resource availability and institutional governance as well as physical location. The data presented in this paper suggests that adaptive capacity is highly volatile and depends on a vast number of factors and influences even in a general area considered ‘vulnerable’.
Apr 18, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/12This paper aims to present a background to resource-based conflicts and how they may be influenced by climate change in the Asia Pacific region. In so doing, this paper first examines the relationship between security, natural resources, and climate change. Second, this paper looks specifically at this issue in the Asia-Pacific region, presenting case studies from South and West Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific. The paper also presents an appraisal of existing address of this issue and explores options for future action that may underpin peace and security in a climate change context at local and international levels.
Sep 18, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/15This paper examines the current evidence on impact of climate change on water and how this might further translate into impact on access to water and sanitation and how this might affect health outcomes. The second aim of this paper is to examine and develop the concept of water insecurity.
Sep 16, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/16This paper explores available data on the observed and projected linkages between climate change and health in the Asia-Pacific region. It highlights key health risks and vulnerabilities due to climate change and extreme climatic events, including infectious diseases, injuries, and other morbidities. Particular health vulnerabilities of women and girls to climate change impacts, along with other vulnerable populations, are also examined.
Sep 18, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/17This paper emphasizes the issues of securing energy needs of poor and climate change mitigation emerging as conflicting challenges, and their significance in the Asia-Pacific region in the global context.
May 3, 2013APHDR Technical Background Paper 2012/18This background paper explores the possible role of nuclear energy in climate change mitigation and in resolving supply security and environmental issues. It concludes with a summary of the main points and recommendations for the way forward.
