The population in the region tripled in the past 65 years to 4 billion. They are forming the largest working population the world has ever seen. There are now more working-aged people and fewer dependents than at any point in history, providing a springboard for growth. To be exact, 68 percent of people are of working age and only 32 percent are dependents. This is an opportunity.

UNDP welcomes this agreement. The contribution represents an important assistance to livelihoods recovery efforts of the Government of Vanuatu which is supported by UNDP. This generous contribution will be used by UNDP and its partners to further build on the results already achieved.

Allow me to start by mentioned that it was in this room in February this year that young people from 14 Pacific Island countries came together to attend the Pacific Youth Forum Against Corruption – and I witnessed the incredible energy youth brought to the table in a Forum dedicated to learning, information sharing, and advocacy on anti-corruption.
