The world’s ‘centre of economic gravity’ has shifted towards Asia and the Pacific. The region’s tremendous GDP growth, over 7.5 per cent per annum on average over the period 1990-2015, has transformed economies and people’s lives. Except for just three countries, the region is now comprised of either middle or high-income countries. Asia-Pacific’s share of global GDP is now over thirty per cent, and is expected to rise to 55 per cent by 2050.

Asia and the Pacific is at a crossroads. The population in the region tripled in the past 65 years to 4 billion. They are forming the largest working population the world has ever seen. There are now more working-aged people and fewer dependents than at any point in history, providing a springboard for growth. To be exact, 68 percent of people are of working age and only 32 percent are dependents. This is an opportunity.
