Preventing Violent Extremism

There is still a limited understanding of the complex political, social and economic factors that influence processes of radicalization and deradicalization in Asia. In the last few years the nature of violent extremism has also undergone a change towards transnationalism and, despite its often localized context in existing conflicts, extremism has attracted international actors. Hate groups and extremist organisations have demonstrated a particular strength in the dissemination of their narratives through the internet.

UNDP employs an inclusive, human rights-based approach to prevent and mitigate violent extremism that is specific to the Asia context. By engaging with civil society, governments and businesses at the national and regional level, UNDP is challenging traditional security approaches by implementing practical programmes that address the root causes of violent extremism.
