Update as of 14 June:

On 14 June, BNPB selected 17 finalists on both hackathon categories. For the Digital Solution Campaign category, the selected teams are Alluvione, Avonturir, Cari!, Difarisk, Gold Diggers, Hypocrite, Jay Team, Maritim Inovatek, Tim Odading, Viktorits, and Win Lucky.

In the Mobile Apps Competition Category, the finalists are Gsquad, InTask, Layana Indonesia, Look@things, Mikids and Trikora. Through the end of June, participants will work on their projects virtually and will showcase their work on 28 June.

When it comes to disaster resilience, digital technology is the way forward, and Indonesia has been at the forefront of this movement. One example is InaRISK, a digital platform first developed by Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) and UNDP in 2016. Loaded with vital information on several disasters in Indonesia caused by natural hazards, the tool has helped many communities respond to earthquakes, floods, landslides, and other disasters in real-time.  Applications such as InaRISK are crucial for disaster-prone countries, like Indonesia, a tropical archipelago which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The impacts of the climate crisis and pandemics have become more present and unpredictable. The need to make the responses more inclusive to the most vulnerable communities has become more urgent than before.

For that reason, as part of UNDP's digital transformation initiative DX4Resilience, UNDP is calling some of Indonesia's creative minds to join the inaRISK Hackathon Fest 2021. 

The hackathon is an opportunity for the Indonesians to contribute with new ideas and solutions to the InaRISK platform and help improve the country's preparedness for disasters. The event aims to connect diverse stakeholders, including technology developers, start-ups, government entities, and the private sector to work on new technologies for disaster resilience.

"This event is an excellent opportunity for new developers to help Indonesia reduce disaster risks – innovation is key to make Indonesia more resilient" says Norimasa Shimomura, Resident Representative UNDP Indonesia.

Since its inception, InaRISK has undergone numerous upgrades. Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tool was expanded to include notifications of so-called "COVID hotspots" based on reports of outbreaks of the disease in specific locations. "Data is crucial to help communities respond, prepare and recover from disasters. The hackathon will help bring new solutions to our national database platform" as Dr. Raditya Jati, S.Si., M.Si., Head of Data, Information and Communication Center, BNPB mentions.

In particular, the hackathon seeks solutions to easing access to the platform for vulnerable communities, including persons with disabilities and groups that may otherwise encounter difficulties during evacuations in a disaster.

"Using digital data and technology will improve how we reduce disaster risks. InaRISK app can be enhanced to ensure citizen's participation and that we leave no one behind" said Sanny Jegillos, Senior Advisor, Disaster Risk Reduction at UNDP Asia Pacific.

Hackathon participants will receive information and training on the InaRISK platform, engagement of vulnerable groups, geospatial training, the use of data in disaster management, and webinars on business models for the development of applications, amongst other programmes. Japan has been an important partner by supporting disaster risk reduction efforts in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We recognize the power of new ideas and innovation to continue building resilience to disasters. The Government of Japan is pleased to support this hackathon, which is a step forward in this direction to engage all in this endeavour!" - reinforced Kanasugi Kenji, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Indonesia.

Judges from a wide range of industries, including the government, private sector, media, and academia will assess participants on such topics as innovation, unique attributes, diversity, compatibility with existing platforms and solutions to current challenges. In addition to awards from sponsors, there will be a financial award of IDR 15,000,000 (approximately USD 1,010) for each of the winners.  Winners will also receive training and mentorship.

The Hackathon is open to Indonesian nationals aged 18 to 40. Registration for the event closed on 6 June.
