Judicial Integrity Champions in APEC Inception Meeting

March 8, 2018

Bangkok, 8-9 March 2018

The Judicial Integrity Champions in APEC project was launched with the support of the United States Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

The overarching objectives of the project are to nurture a network of judicial integrity champions in APEC to support each other in their reform efforts through peer learning, and building on existing efforts to jointly develop a self-assessment methodology for courts that integrates integrity into a broader performance measurement framework on court excellence. The project aims to support the piloting of the methodology in at least one of the target countries in the region.

Specifically, through this project, UNDP aims to support judicial strengthening initiatives in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Hence, the delegates included high-level representatives of the judiciaries from the target countries, international experts and judicial integrity champions such as Judicial Integrity Group, International Consortium for Court Excellence (ICCE), civil society and partner agencies such as UNODC.

The two-day workshop began by taking stock of reform efforts, identifying needs of the courts and co-designing the peer learning network. Discussions were also made on adaptation of existing methodologies such as the International Framework for Court Excellence. Synergies were also identified with the Global Judicial Integrity Network which will be launched by UNODC in April.
